As Gabriel and Michael came upon the home, the door was hanging half off the hinges, blowing back and forth in the breeze forlornly, the open doorway like a gaping maw, warning them away from entering. A chill traveled down Gabrielâs spine, raising goose bumps on his skin. Dark magic was in the air.
The rest of the small working farm had been razed to the ground; the air was redolent with the smell of burnt animal flesh. The house was the only building left standing, and Gabriel couldnât help but think a message was being sent.
Stepping onto the porch and entering the home cautiously, Michael on his heels, Gabriel looked around the living room. Catalina had definitely put up a fight, or the being who did this had ransacked the home afterward.
Michaelâs voice in the silence startled him. âThereâs no life present in this home. Do you feel that? The oily sensation in the air?â
âYes.â Gabriel shivered. âWhatever was here was full of dark magics and leaked them all over the place. Almost like a dog pissing on its territory.â
Michael hummed in agreement. âGross and unnecessary. Why?â
âIâm thinking they were sending a message.â
âFor you?â
âOh yeah, definitely. I canât see this as a coincidence with what happened to Antonio and Bain too. Can you?â
Michael sighed. âIâm not sure. I donât like coincidences either, but Iâm not sure two incidences are enough to push the panic button yet.â
Gabrielâs shoulders twitched. âI really think I should warn my rescues to be more cautious.â
âI think thatâs a good plan. Put them on alert, but not on lockdown mode. Hopefully, these are two isolated events.â
âDamn it. Now I wish I would have checked out Antonio and Bainâs place. They didnât say anything to set off warning bells to me, and their description of what occurred sounded like a Bellator or Tenebris attack. Butâ¦what if it wasnât? We need to check it out after this.â
Michael nodded his agreement and moved farther into the house, searching for Catalinaâs body. Gabriel hoped they found her so her son would have the closure of a burial.
Rounding the corner into the kitchen, Gabriel found her lying in the middle of the floor, body broken, spirit missing. No. More than missing. There was nothing left of her at all; she was nothing more than an empty husk. Gabriel fully understood what Gabe had meant by her being gone now. âSoul eater,â he breathed out, catching Michaelâs wide-eyed gaze.
